1/6 Sharpen and Sharpie

I filled each of ten paper grocery bags with two of my own pre-loved cashmere sweaters, some of which are 40 years old, to give to family members coming to celebrate with me. They come in all sizes, since over that time span so have I, so I was able to select appropriate sizes and styles for each person. I also raided my “gift closet”, where I have been storing new, unused gifts which were given to me. From there I managed to fill gift bags for them and for every neighbor on my street. About the only things I bought were dog and cat treats. I still have too much stuff, but I got rid of a lot in one swell fell swoop!

Thank you Ellen for sharing your lovely note. What a lovely way to inspire us in 2026!

Sharpen and Sharpie

Lately, the idea of circling back to the basics seems grounding. So let’s “circle back” to the beginning of the book and sharpen our skills, fill in the blanks with parts we missed, continue to make progress in the areas that need attention, and grab a sharpie marker to cross off the tasks that are complete. A virtual Sharpie is also an option 🙂

I promise that this will not feel like a rerun, even if you made great strides.

The Gentle WhyLesson: This isn’t morbid — it’s loving. Swedish Death Cleaning isn’t about getting rid of things — it’s about caring for the people who will.

For today, let’s start with care, not urgency.

Gentle challenge: Choose one drawer or shelf and remove anything you wouldn’t want a loved one to puzzle over. Keep what feels clear. Let go of the rest.

What surprised you about what you kept? Reply here if you like to share.

Gentle Reminder to avoid Storage Units

If you’ve ever thought a storage unit would “solve” the clutter, here’s the truth: once you get one, it becomes a forever subscription you’ll rarely use — and almost never empty.

We attach deep emotion to material things, but those items often weigh us down far more than they serve us. Consider this your gentle permission slip to start letting go of the books, unused gifts, extra linens, old clothes, and sentimental papers that are taking up space. Your future self — and someday, your loved ones — will thank you.
